Writers in Residence
The ¹ú²úÊÓÆµ’s three Writers in Residence are here to help.
Professional, published writers and Royal Literary Fund Fellows, Maeve Clarke, Liz Hyder and Rosalind Harvey, offer confidential, one-to-one tutorials for students in all subject areas and to support all aspects of academic writing. This includes essays, reports, theses, dissertations, or personal statements. Sessions last up to 50 minutes. Our free service is provided by the Royal Literary Fund (RLF) which sponsors over 80 writers to work in universities across the UK.
Students of any discipline, at any level of study – from 1st year to postgraduate, and also staff – are welcome to book a session.

Maeve Clarke
Maeve is a novelist who also writes for theatre. Winner of the SI Leeds Literary Prize 2024, she was also the writer for the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. She has been longlisted for the Bath Novel Award and the Mslexia Novel Award. Her plays have been shortlisted for the Sky Arts RSL Writers Award and longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting.

Liz Hyder
Liz is an award-winning writer and creative workshop leader. She writes for both adults and younger readers and Bearmouth, her debut novel for young adults, won the Branford Boase Award and the Waterstones Children's Book Award for Older Readers. Her latest book, The Twelve, won the Nero Book Award for Children’s Fiction and the Tir na n-Og Award for English language Children’s Fiction. Her acclaimed books for adults are The Gifts (runner-up of the McKitterick Prize) and The Illusions. She has also worked in the arts as a PR Consultant, dabbled in journalism and film-making, and run workshops on creative writing for the likes of Hay Festival and Moniack Mhor.

Rosalind Harvey
Rosalind is a critically acclaimed literary translator, focusing on contemporary Latin American fiction. Her work has been shortlisted for the International Booker Prize, the Guardian First Book Award, and the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, an Arts Foundation Fellow, and co-founder of the Emerging Translators Network. She is currently working on an experimental memoir about translation and therapy.

Booking sessions
Tutorials with Maeve (who covers Mondays online and Tuesdays on campus), Liz (who covers Wednesdays on campus and Thursdays online) and Rosalind (Fridays online) last up to 50 minutes, and can be booked by emailing them direct. Face to face sessions take place in Edward Elgar G107 on the St. John’s campus.
